ITBP was raised on 24 Oct 1962, after the Chinese aggression, under the CRPF Act with 4 battalions.
It is now governed by the ITBP Force Act, 1992, and is a CAPF under the Ministry of Home Affairs.
It guards the ~3,488 km India–China border from Karakoram Pass (Ladakh) to Jachep La (Arunachal Pradesh).

ITBP का गठन 24 अक्टूबर 1962 को चीनी आक्रमण के बाद CRPF अधिनियम के तहत 4 बटालियनों के साथ हुआ।
अब यह ITBP बल अधिनियम, 1992 द्वारा शासित है और गृह मंत्रालय के अधीन एक CAPF है।
यह कराकोरम दर्रे (लद्दाख) से जाचेप ला (अरुणाचल प्रदेश) तक ~3,488 किमी लंबी भारत–चीन सीमा की सुरक्षा करता है।
