On 27 October 1947, 1st Battalion of the Sikh Regiment under Lt Col Dewan Ranjit Rai landed at Srinagar airfield.
Lt Col Rai was killed near Baramulla and posthumously awarded the Maha Vir Chakra.
The landing followed the signing of the Instrument of Accession by Maharaja Hari Singh on 26 October 1947.

ले. कर्नल राय बारामूला के निकट वीरगति को प्राप्त हुए और उन्हें मरणोपरांत महावीर चक्र दिया गया।
यह अवतरण 26 अक्टूबर 1947 को महाराजा हरि सिंह द्वारा विलय पत्र पर हस्ताक्षर के बाद हुआ।
