Leh has 22 seats and Kargil 21; new councils include Sankoo, Changthang, Nubra, Sham, Zanskar and Drass.
The change follows the LAHDC (Amendment) Regulation, 2026 creating councils for all districts.
The move is part of decentralisation demands in Ladakh, including Sixth Schedule-type safeguards.
Static GK: Ladakh became a Union Territory on 31 October 2019; LAHDC Leh was set up in 1995 and LAHDC Kargil in 2003.
