MMX aims to be the first mission to orbit Phobos, collect samples from its surface and return to Earth from the Mars system.
It will study Phobos and Deimos; arrival at Mars is expected in 2027 and sample return around 2031.
ESA provides deep-space communication equipment and Estrack ground-station support; a French-German rover is on board.
Static GK: Phobos is the larger and inner moon of Mars; Deimos is the smaller, outer moon.
